I originally made this for a Secret Santa for a friend who loves Street Fighter. The version I built plays each character's stage music when the hour arrives at their portrait. This should be very easily customizable for other themes as well.
How it works: the clock module jumps its two wires every hour which triggers the DFPlayer to play the next song on the SD card. The clock runs on a AA battery and will keep time as long as it has charge. The audio player requires 5V (USB-C connection) to work. The audio module also resets whenever it loses power, so i included two buttons to correct for this. The right button advances to the next song on the list, and the right button goes back one. The left/right buttons can also be held to decrease/increase the volume respectively but this too reset on power loss.
Circuitry: The jump signal from the clock module is too fast to drain the GPIO pin on the DFPlayer so I added a monostable 555 circuit as a go between. I discovered this was necessary after building the main proto board so the trigger circuit is off to the side in the photos, you could probably fit it all on the main board. The the DFplayer includes a 3W amplifier so the speaker really should also be rated for 3W. Note that the 22Ω resistor in series with the speaker is to bring the volume down, which i found to be a bit too loud. It should have a higher rating that standard resistors (I used a 2W) and the value can be adjusted for your volume preference. You could even use a potentiometer but i had a hard time finding one rated high enough. Also note that not all USB-C chargers seem to work with this. I'm not sure why but I suspect it might be because it's just pulling 5V direct without communicating with the charger, which some fancier chargers might not like.
Please excuse the sloppyness in the electronics, I'm a mechanical engineer.
