BOM:
USB 5V 60mm fan (up to 3x per compute unit).
Heatshrink wrap (2x small, 1x med per compute unit, see instructions below).
8mm M3 Screws (minimum 4x, recommended 8x per compute span).
M3 Inserts (minimum 4x, recommended 8x per compute span).
Printing:
Printed on a MK4s with prusamint PETG. No issues (see photos)
15% infill, PETG, structural.
Print face down; no additional support is required.
Be sure to clear holes after print.
Tolerances may be adjusted in the parametric model (under tolerances).
Be sure to test print complex joints and holes using minimum slices to ensure correct fit without wasting filament.
Assembly:
Fan power harness:
Cut USB plug cable just beyond the shrink wrap for female PWM connection, remove shrink and strip black and yellow wires.
Cut USB extension cable at midpoint, remove wrap.
Cut USB extension cable female connector ends at bend, strip black and yellow wires.
Cut (or remove if you have a molex tool) the remain wires from the female plugs.
Separate black and yellow wires, slide over small heatshrink wrap on both.
Slide over medium heatshrinkg wrap on USB plug.
Solder black and yellow wires.
Slide small heatshrink wrap over solder joints and shrink.
Slide med heatshrink wrap over joint covering to the original USB plug wrap.
Fans:
Remove black plug and re-routing power cables so it exits the back of the fan instead of on the edge.
Tip fans into compute element and rotate up. then slide to face (power cables must be on floor).
Screw fans in to face of compute element.
Connect power cables to power harness created above.
Tape down power harness and cables to floor of compute element
Route power harness USB connection out the back.
Compute Unit:
Use this technique to insert M3 inserts into bridge. M3 insert holes are wider and are not all the way through.
slide compute unit over bridge cleat. Directional UP has driver slots on top, USB power harness slot on bottom. These are designed to be relatively tight - take your time and support as you connect. You may require a supporting element. Faces will be flush at the bridge face.
Use Driver screw 8mm M3 screws into inserts. These will end up being flush with the face of the compute element.
Use this technique to insert M3 inserts into outer computer element. M3 insert holes are wider and are not all the way through.
Slide completed 1.5U span into universal rack adapter and use 8mm M3 screws to lock in place. You may leave these off if you want easy rackout (recommend screwing).
Rack:
Use 4x rackmount bolts for top and bottom U's, and a set of 2x rackmount bolts for .5U middle span (see pictures).
Fit needs to be tight but do not crush rack adapter with screws.
Fan covers will press fit onto the front of the mounted kit (see pictures).
Compute:
Control power on/off to compute elements with either 'always on' power, or IPMI/kvm combos.
Plug USB power harness into rear USB port.
