As a kid of the 70s, I enjoyed playing games on Atari 2600 and Atari 800 computer systems using the joysticks that came with the 2600 systems. Fast forward to now with Retropie and emulators, I wanted the real game experience with the 2600 joysticks. I bought some 2600 style usb joysticks along with a couple refurbished original 2600 joysticks. Unfortunately the usb style Joysticks failed almost immediately under intense gaming. Even the refurbished joysticks had weakened over the years and needed upgrades.
I decided to see if I could design and 3d print beefed up versions of the joystick insert that would stand up to the intense gaming. After a number of revisions, I think I have come up with a version that will survive. Two separate joysticks with the new inserts have so far held up well.
The insert is made up of:
- two separate 3d printed parts
- Atari Joystick part A.stl printed in PETG filament
- Atari Joystick part B.stl printed in TPU 98A filament
- a ¼" wooden or aluminum rod inserted inside the insert
- 4 - M3x12 screws to fastened the two 3d printed parts together.
Each of the printed parts were successfully printed as oriented with a raft, without slicer generated supports.
* Joystick part B does have some supports that I built into the model that will need to be removed before use.

I added Atari Joystick part B - no supports STL file at user request.
Also, I sourced my ¼" wooden dowel & ¼" aluminum rod stock from Lowe's home improvement store.
