Anycubic i3 Mega S ULTIMATE Upgrade Guide

Y actualmente utilizo este extrusor metálico: https://amzn.to/4fR0cNy || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_oFSZjfB

- Fleje que uso: https://amzn.to/3UItyEh || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_oCpzQcV

- Rodamientos: https://amzn.to/3Vl6lIm || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_ooH3ziH

- Ventiladores silenciosos: https://amzn.to/41oMJ9S || https://amzn.to/4n4DwvO || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_oFavQap
- Agarre cama: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3217199
- Soporte tornillo eje z: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5232181

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ # Anycubic i3 Mega S – How I’ve Upgraded It Over Time
The Anycubic i3 Mega S is a printer that came out a few years ago and, at the time, was a great entry-level option into the world of 3D printing. However, as time went by, the results I was getting with it were pretty mediocre: prints with leveling issues, vibrations, extrusion problems, and inconsistent finishes.
Instead of leaving it forgotten in a corner, I decided to gradually upgrade it, and the change has been huge. Today it’s practically unrecognizable and produces prints of much higher quality with far less frustration.
Before going into the physical upgrades, I want to talk about what I consider the best upgrade I’ve ever done to this printer: installing Klipper.
Klipper with Sonic Pad – The Big Game Changer
Without a doubt, what has transformed my Anycubic the most has been installing Klipper, in my case through the Creality Sonic Pad. The setup is relatively simple, and the improvement in performance is noticeable right away:
- Faster and smoother movements.
- Better control of extrusion and temperature.
- A much more modern and user-friendly interface to manage the printer.
I’ve also uploaded my printer.cfg file in the downloads section, in case anyone wants to use my configuration as a starting point and save some time. For me, this is what really took my “old” printer to the next level.

1. Direct Drive Extruder with Nema 17 Motor
One of the biggest problems with this printer was the original bowden extruder, which often clogged and didn’t provide the precision I needed for flexible filaments. The solution was switching to a direct drive extruder, which is much more reliable and offers better retraction.
I built the mount using this design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4125059
Here’s the link to the motor I use: https://amzn.to/4g4Gga7 || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_olN2teH
And currently, I use this metal extruder: https://amzn.to/4fR0cNy || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_oFSZjfB
With this change, layer consistency improved a lot, and now I can print TPU without worrying about jams halfway through a print.
2. BLTouch
Another major annoyance with this machine was manual bed leveling, which was a real pain and never truly perfect. Over time, any small misalignment meant starting over from scratch.
The BLTouch completely solved this. Now the printer does auto-leveling in seconds, and I can be sure the first layer will always stick perfectly. For me, it’s a must-have on any printer of this range.

3. BigTreeTech SKR Mini E3 V3 Mainboard
One of the most important upgrades I made was swapping the original mainboard for a BTT SKR Mini E3 V3. This upgrade brought several benefits: silent drivers that drastically reduced the machine’s noise, better compatibility with modern firmware like Klipper, and improved stability overall.
The swap was relatively simple since it’s designed as a direct replacement, and since then, the printer has been running much more smoothly and quietly.

4. Magnetic Spring Steel Sheet
The stock glass bed worked, but it was inconvenient: you had to wait for it to cool, use a spatula, and sometimes even damage prints when removing them.
I installed a flexible magnetic sheet, and the difference is incredible. When a print finishes, I just lift the sheet, flex it slightly, and the piece pops right off effortlessly. It’s one of those upgrades that may seem small but completely changes the day-to-day experience.

5. Y-Axis Belt Tensioner
Another issue I noticed was that over time, the Y-axis belt would loosen, causing weird lines on the prints. To fix this, I installed a belt tensioner.
With it, I can adjust belt tension in seconds, preventing shifted layers or vibration problems.

6. Cable Chains for X and Z Axes
The wiring on the Anycubic i3 Mega S isn’t great. Cables are left hanging loose, and over time they can suffer from wear and tear. To improve both looks and safety, I added cable chains to the X and Z axes.
Now the cables move in an organized way, avoiding stress or breakage. Plus, it gives the printer a much more “pro” look.

7. Anti-Wobble Bracket for the Lead Screw
A common problem with this model is that the Z-axis lead screw tends to move slightly at the top, generating vibrations and small layer artifacts.
The fix was installing a printed part that secures the screw in place and prevents unwanted movement. It’s a simple, inexpensive upgrade that really helps achieve more stable finishes.

Bearings: https://amzn.to/3Vl6lIm || https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_ooH3ziH
8. Larger Bed Leveling Knobs
Finally, I installed larger knobs for bed adjustment. Even though with the BLTouch I no longer have to level the bed constantly, these knobs make the initial adjustment much easier and more precise.
It’s a simple, low-cost upgrade that I recommend to anyone still using manual leveling. I also added silicone spacers to help maintain bed stability.

A Huge Extra Help: Calibration with SpaceTest
Although it’s not a hardware upgrade per se, one of the things that helped me the most in fine-tuning the printer was using this calibration model:
https://makerworld.com/es/models/1690929-spacetest#profileId-1792451
Thanks to it, I was able to dial in the printer much better and confirm that all the modifications were working as they should. I totally recommend it for anyone doing upgrades on their printer.
