This is a parameterized model based on the design from konejavihannes on thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5226549, which is very nice but only supported AAA and AA batteries and in the specific 2x8 configuration. I also wanted to support not just D cells and 18650 cells but also non-battery cylindrical objects like crayons and markers. So I created this model in OpenSCAD using their printed model as a reference.
It's a good way to keep batteries out of electronics when not in use, for the preservation of the battery and electronic alike, without using a lot of filament on more sophisticated designs. Or a set of 4 to 8 (maybe even 16!) crayons in a handbag without worrying about the cardboard getting damaged. Or a way to keep a handful of Nerf darts handy for the next office flashpoint. If it's roughly a cylinder, I think this design can work for it!
While this design cannot deviate from 2 rows, it can be extended to as many columns as can fit on the printer bed. Printing in “spiral vase” mode with 3 layers on the bottom using PLA+ worked well for me.
If customizing, it is recommended to give an extra 1mm for the cylinder diameter, and at least 4 to 6 times the wall thickness for the lid tolerance - the lid should be easy to slide over the hump on the case, but provide enough resistance that it doesn't fall off on its own.
I have noticed there is a bit of a flare out on the larger D cell print but otherwise seems completely usable for my needs - hopefully yours too!
