This is a Moxon antenna based on the DL2MAN 70cm UHF antenna although heavily modified. To construct it you will need the following:
To build:
- print out the ADS-B moxon antenna
- Take a piece of wire approximate 14cm in length and pass one end through either of the retaining holes on the reflector side of the moxon frame and secure it snuggly with a cable tie or superglue. Cut off any excess wire and trim off the end of the cable tie.
- Pass the wire through both of the wire retaining loops on the reflector side, making sure it is as taught as it can be, and pass it through the other retaining hole. Secure that side with another cable tie and trim off the excess.
- Take 2 pieces of wire each about approximately 8 cm in length. Strip off about 2-3 mm of wire for one end of each wire.
- Solder one of these wires to the centre pin of the SMA connector and the other wire to any one of the ground pins on the SMA connector.
- Pass the barrel of the SMA connector through the large hole, next to the pointer, on the moxon frame and ensure that the retaining nut is properly tightened.
- pass the wire attached to the centre post of the SMA connector through one of the loops on frame, making sure it is as taught as it can be, and pass through the retaining hole. Again secure that with a cable tie or superglue and trim off any excess wire and the loose end of the cable tie.
- Pass the wire attached to the ground pin through the only unused loop on the frame and push it through the retaining hole. Trim off the excess wire and remove the loose end of the cable tie.
The moxon antenna has a 10mm hole for you to mount on a pole.
As to performance, the moxon being highly directional could be used to watch ground movements at a local airport or local low level traffic coming from a certain direction. It is also useful for picking up high level traffic too.
I've included the SWR from the Nano VNA for the antenna, the fact it is receive only means I'm not that bothered about a perfect SWR.
