Summary
Lumos is a LED powered light with an easy construction based on very few and cheap electronic components.
The round design is simple and clean but stylish at the same time.
There are two versions available.
First a round (smaller) version; secondly a higher version.
Additional future improvements:
- adding RGB LED
- Dimming
- smart light control & OpenHAB integration
More information and detailed instructions will follow here: https://www.neop5.de/lumos-light-bowl/
Sources
I was asked to upload the sources... and here they are.
The model was created on Tinkercad: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/izorRZ408Y4
Updates
- small update to the base plate model; it now includes a small whole to bring the cable out ;)
- updated linking description because of updated website
Instructions
Printing Settings
For printing I used the following settings:
- 0.2 mm layers
- 50 mm/sec speed
- white 1.75mm PLA
- 25% infill
- support needed
Printing Instructions
- print the lumos-r2-base.stl which is the base that keeps the electronics
- print one of the lumos-r2-light*.stl lumos-r2-light_small.stl is shown in the pictures above)
- optional: print the lumos-r2-shild.stl (pictures above are without). The shield can be glued to the top of the bowl to limit the light illuminating the ceiling.
Electronics & components needed
I used the following electronic components
- 0.35A / 8.5-22.5 Power Supply
- a switch
- 3/5 Watts Daylite COB power LED cool white (5W shown, I prefer 3W)
- MEANWELL LD350 LED Driver
- COB LED Cooler (check that it fits your LED)
- some cable
- minimal amount of hot glue
- minimal amount of thermal glue (to glue LED to the cooler)
Assemble Instructions
Solder a cable to your power-supply
Solder the other end to your switch and mount it through the whole of the base-plate
Glue your LED onto the cooler; make sure to use a suitable thermal glue
solder wires to your LED and the output pins of your MEANWELL driver (be careful to not overheat whether the LED nor the driver); you will need to put your cable through the whole at the bottom of the bowl and the top of your base plate first.
solder the input pins of the MEANWELL driver to your switch
Use some small dots of hot glue to fix the LED with the cooler on the inside of the bowl.
- If needed isolate the cables and circuit!
LUMOS - Light Bowl
Project Name
LUMOS - A simple LED light with just a few cheap components
Overview & Background
You will learn how to print, assemble your own LUMOS light bowl by first printing all needed parts on your 3D printer and assemble them together with a few electronic components
Objectives
You will learn medium skills on 3D printing combined with basic skills of electronics and soldering.
Audiences
This project is suitable for beginners in 3D printing and/or electronics such as pupils at a school working group or students starting at university to get basic knowledge.
If supervised by a teacher or parent kids can start by the age of 12 or above with this project.
Being 15 or older you should be able to build your LUMOS light bowl without any help but beware of the hot iron and have your parents at side when applying electricity the first time!
The recommendation above is based on the fact that a ready-to-go and calibrated 3D printer is available. If you need to calibrate your 3D printer first you should keep in mind that lots of technical knowledge and research should be done first.
Subjects
This project deals with the following subjects:
- 3D printing
- basic electronics
- high power LED´s
- construction & assembly
- soldering & isolation
Skills Learned (Standards)
When completing this project the following skills should have been learned:
- slicing and printing of 3D models
- basic handling of a 3D printer
- basic soldering skills
- basic knowledge of electronic circuits & isolation
