The Whispering Abyss
Hermaeus Mora, known in this setting as The Whispering Abyss, is an enigmatic Outer Entity who presides over forbidden knowledge, secrets, and fate. Unlike most extraplanar beings, the Abyss does not seek worship in the traditional sense—it seeks curiosity, for curiosity is the thread that binds mortals to its endless web of truths.
Domain
Alignment: Neutral (with alien tendencies)
Portfolio: Forbidden Knowledge, Fate, Secrets, Mutation
Symbol: A swirling black vortex with countless eyes peering outward.
Plane: The Infinite Archive—a writhing, ink-black ocean filled with floating tomes, scrolls, and tendrils of living parchment. The plane is alive, and every secret ever whispered eventually drifts into its depths.
Nature and Influence
The Whispering Abyss manifests as a mass of eyes and tendrils, each eye representing a truth, a lie, or a possibility. It does not speak in words but in thought-echoes, riddles, and visions. Mortals who encounter its influence often describe:
Dreams of ink and eyes
Compulsions to write or record
Sudden revelations that unravel sanity
Its gifts are never free. Every secret learned binds the seeker closer to the Abyss, and those who delve too deep risk becoming Archivists of Flesh—twisted beings who serve as living libraries.
Followers and Cults
Unlike other extraplanar patrons, the Abyss does not demand temples. Its cults are hidden societies, often masquerading as scholars, librarians, or astrologers. They believe:
Knowledge is the only true power.
Truth is mutable; perception shapes reality.
The Abyss is not evil—it is inevitable.
Common practices:
Ink Rituals: Followers tattoo secrets on their skin, believing the Abyss reads through flesh.
The Offering of Eyes: Symbolic or literal sacrifice of sight in exchange for insight.
Boons and Curses
Those who serve the Abyss may gain:
Whispers of Fate: Advantage on Intelligence checks related to lore or prophecy.
Tendrils of Insight: Ability to cast Augury or Divination without material components (at a cost of exhaustion or sanity).
But they risk:
Ocular Mutation: Extra eyes sprouting on body.
Compulsive Recording: Must write down every secret learned, or suffer psychic damage.
Possible D&D Mechanics
Warlock Patron: The Whispering Abyss (similar to Great Old One, but focused on knowledge and mutation).
Cleric Domain: Knowledge with unique Abyssal features (e.g., tentacle-themed Channel Divinity).
Artifacts:
The Codex of Infinite Eyes: A living book that whispers forbidden spells.
Ink of the Abyss: A black ichor that can rewrite reality when inscribed.
Adventure Hooks
The Vanishing Library: A grand archive disappears overnight, leaving only pools of ink and whispers.
The Eye Plague: A town suffers from a strange affliction—eyes growing on walls, floors, and even people.
The Archivist’s Bargain: A scholar offers the party forbidden knowledge in exchange for a piece of their memory.

Traits
Eldritch Nature. Mora ignores difficult terrain and can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain (taking 10 force damage if it ends its turn inside an object).
Form of Ink and Eyes. When a creature starts its turn within 30 ft. of Mora, it must succeed on a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw or be unsettled until the start of its next turn: disadvantage on the first attack it makes and it cannot take reactions triggered by movement. A creature that succeeds is immune for 24 hours.
Forbidden Ledger. Mora has advantage on saving throws against spells and magical effects. If a creature casts a spell within 120 ft., Mora immediately learns its school, level, and the caster’s surface thoughts (no save).
Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Mora fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Spellcasting. Mora is a 20th-level spellcaster (Intelligence is spellcasting ability, spell save DC 25, +17 to hit with spell attacks). It casts the following spells without components and cannot be counterspelled by creatures under the Confounded by Secrets effect.
At will: detect thoughts, mage hand, minor illusion, sending, telekinesis
3/day each: teleport, synaptic static, wall of force, disintegrate, true seeing
1/day each: mass suggestion, maze, power word kill, foresight, wish (cannot duplicate direct damage; uses wish to alter knowledge, fate, or terrain)
Mythic Trait — Archive Revealed (Recharges after a Long Rest). When Mora would be reduced to 0 hit points, it sheds its shell, regains 385 hit points, and the battlefield floods with living ink. While mythic, Mora gains the Ink Ocean lair benefits (see Lair Actions) even outside its lair, and its legendary actions improve (see Mythic Actions).
Actions
Multiattack. Mora makes three Tendril attacks and uses Whisper of the Ledger or Confounded by Secrets.
Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (4d8+9) bludgeoning plus 18 (4d8) psychic. If the target is Large or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 21). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained. Mora can have up to four creatures grappled.
Eye of Inevitability (Recharge 5–6). Mora fixes its central eye on a creature it can see within 120 ft. The target must make a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, its fate is sealed for 1 minute: its speed is halved, it cannot benefit from advantage, and when it starts its turn it takes 21 (6d6) psychic damage. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
Whisper of the Ledger. Mora targets up to three creatures it can see within 90 ft. Each must make a DC 25 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 36 (8d8) psychic damage and has disadvantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma checks and saving throws until the end of Mora’s next turn. On a success, half damage and no disadvantage.
Confounded by Secrets. Mora floods minds with paradoxes. Creatures of Mora’s choice within 60 ft. must succeed on a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw or be confounded until the end of their next turn. While confounded, a creature cannot take reactions and when it casts a spell it must roll a d6: on a 1–2 the spell fizzles (slot wasted), on a 3–4 it targets a random valid creature, on a 5–6 it functions normally.
Knowledge Drain (Recharge 6). Mora touches a creature grappled by it or within 5 ft. The target makes a DC 25 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, it takes 45 (10d8) psychic damage and loses proficiency in one skill or saving throw (Mora’s choice) for 24 hours. Mora gains proficiency in the chosen item for the same duration and heals 30 hit points. On a success, half damage only.
Legendary Actions
Mora can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Mora regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Tendril Swipe. Mora makes one Tendril attack. If it hits a creature that is already grappled by Mora, the creature is flung up to 20 ft. to an unoccupied space and knocked prone (escape DC 21 ends the grapple first).
Gaze of the Many. One creature Mora can see within 60 ft. must succeed on a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of Mora until the end of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this effect for 24 hours.
Ink Step. Mora moves up to half its fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks, phasing through creatures and objects as per Eldritch Nature.
Secret Rewritten (Costs 2 Actions). Mora imposes a fate twist on one creature it can see within 60 ft.: the creature rerolls one d20 it rolled since the end of Mora’s last turn; Mora chooses which result the creature must keep. If the creature has legendary resistance, it must expend one use or be affected.
Mind Flurry (Costs 2 Actions). Mora targets up to two creatures within 60 ft. Each takes 18 (4d8) psychic damage and must succeed on a DC 23 Intelligence saving throw or be staggered until the end of its next turn (speed 0; can still take actions but cannot take reactions).
Pages Become Teeth (Costs 3 Actions). Living parchment swarms erupt in a 20‑ft. radius within 120 ft. Creatures in the area must make a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) slashing and piercing damage on a failed save, or half on a success. The area becomes razor ink until the end of Mora’s next turn: it is difficult terrain, and a creature that moves through it takes 10 slashing damage per 5 ft.
Mythic Actions (while Archive Revealed is active)
Mora gains the following options in addition to its legendary actions.
Ink Flood (Costs 2 Actions). A 30‑ft.-square within 120 ft. becomes ink ocean until the end of Mora’s next turn. Creatures that start or end their turn there must make a DC 23 Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check or be restrained by inky tendrils (escape DC 21).
All‑Seeing Ledger (Costs 3 Actions). Until the end of Mora’s next turn, all creatures Mora can see have disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws, and Mora has advantage on saving throws and attack rolls.
Lair Actions (The Infinite Archive)
When fighting in its lair, Mora can invoke one of the following lair actions at initiative count 20 (losing ties):
Living Stacks. Shelves contort; choose a 40‑ft. line. Creatures in the line must succeed on a DC 23 Dexterity saving throw or take 22 (5d8) bludgeoning and be knocked prone; the area becomes difficult terrain.
Index of True Names. One creature Mora can see within 120 ft. must succeed on a DC 23 Charisma saving throw or have disadvantage on saving throws until the next round as its true name resonates.
Ink Storm. A 20‑ft. radius becomes heavily obscured until the next round. Creatures that start their turn there take 14 (4d6) psychic damage and must succeed on a DC 23 Wisdom saving throw or be confounded (as the action) until they leave the area.
Regional Effects
The region within 6 miles of Mora’s lair is altered by its presence:
Whispering Tomes. Books gain spontaneous marginalia revealing secrets; Intelligence checks to recall lore have advantage but risk short‑term madness on a natural 1.
Eyes in the Ink. Pools of ink and shadows sprout watchful eyes; creatures feel observed (disadvantage on Stealth).
Mutable Fate. After a long rest, creatures may replace one d20 roll from the previous day with the new day’s first roll; consequences often warp unexpectedly (DM’s discretion).
The Whispering Abyss (Warlock Patron)
You bargain with an entity of writhing ink and unblinking eyes whose domain is forbidden knowledge and mutable destiny. The Whispering Abyss does not trade in worship—it trades in curiosity. Each secret you learn binds you tighter to its living Archive.
Expanded Spell List
The Whispering Abyss lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell.
Spell Level | Spells |
|---|---|
1st | Comprehend Languages, Disguise Self |
2nd | Detect Thoughts, Mirror Image |
3rd | Clairvoyance, Hypnotic Pattern |
4th | Divination, Dimension Door |
5th | Legend Lore, Modify Memory |
Mystic Arcanum (Optional Expanded Choices). When you gain a Mystic Arcanum feature, you can also choose the following (in addition to your normal options):
6th: True Seeing, Mass Suggestion
7th: Forcecage, Plane Shift
8th: Mind Blank, Maze
9th: Foresight, Imprisonment
Level 1 — Awakened Ledger
You gain the following benefits:
Archivist’s Insight. You gain proficiency in Arcana and Investigation. If you already have one, choose History or Religion instead. You can use a stylus, quill, or any writing implement as your spellcasting focus.
Whispered Telepathy. You can telepathically communicate with any creature you can see within 60 feet that understands at least one language. Communication is fragmentary and impressionistic—images, emotions, and short phrases.
Read the Page. Once per turn when you deal damage to a creature with a warlock spell or eldritch blast, you glean one of the following about it:
• Current hit points,
• Damage resistances/immunities/vulnerabilities, or
• Highest ability score.
(You choose which to learn each time.)
Design intent: A knowledge-forward 1st-level feature (akin to Awakened Mind or Hexblade’s Curse in impact) that helps target selection and party tactics without spiking damage.
Level 6 — Ink-Touched Form
Your patron’s essence saturates your body with watchful ink.
Inky Step. When a creature you can see targets you with an attack, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on that attack and teleport up to 10 feet to a space you can see. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses after a long rest.
Tether of Secrets. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with eldritch blast, you can lash it with ink-tendrils. That creature’s speed is reduced by 10 feet and it can’t take reactions until the start of your next turn.
Eyes in the Ink. You gain darkvision out to 120 feet. If you already have darkvision, its range increases by 60 feet. In addition, you have advantage on ability checks made to detect illusions and on saving throws against being blinded.
Level 10 — Mnemonic Ward
Your mind becomes anchored against manipulation and paradox.
You gain resistance to psychic damage and advantage on saving throws against charmed, frightened, and illusion effects.
Rewrite the Margin. As a reaction when a creature you can see within 30 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can force it to reroll. You choose which result the creature must use. You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1), and you regain all uses after a long rest.
Design intent: A robust defensive tier plus limited fate control to feel distinctly “Abyssal.” Comparable in strength to other 10th‑level features like Fiend’s Hurl Through Hell (situational) or GOO’s Thought Shield.
Level 14 — Consign to the Archive
Your patron opens a page of the Infinite Archive and attempts to shelve a creature within it.
Consign. When you hit a creature with a warlock spell or eldritch blast, you can force it to make an Intelligence saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failure, the creature is shunted into a labyrinthine ink-demi‑plane (as maze, but the creature uses Intelligence to escape). At the end of each of its turns, it makes another Intelligence saving throw, ending the effect on a success.
While consigned, the creature is banished and incapacitated, and cannot perceive or interact with the world beyond the Archive.
Once you consign a creature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.
If the consigned creature escapes or the effect ends, it reappears in the nearest unoccupied space to where it vanished, briefly staggered—it has disadvantage on the first attack roll, ability check, or saving throw it makes before the end of its next turn.
Design intent: A control-oriented capstone akin to maze but fueled by your cantrip/spell hits, making your core loop matter in boss fights.
Eldritch Invocations (Abyss-Themed Options)
You can choose these invocations when you gain the Eldritch Invocations feature.
Eyes of the Archive
Prerequisite: The Whispering Abyss patron, 5th level
You gain truesight 30 feet while your eyes are open and unobscured. You can also see through magical darkness.
Ink Walk
Prerequisite: The Whispering Abyss patron, 5th level
As a bonus action, you can magically step through a smear of shadowed ink you can see within 30 feet, teleporting to another smear within 30 feet of you that you can also see. You can create one such smear at your location as part of the same bonus action. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses after a long rest.
Archivist’s Grip
Prerequisite: The Whispering Abyss patron, eldritch blast*
When you hit a creature with eldritch blast, you can reduce its fly speed to 0 until the start of your next turn. If it doesn’t have a fly speed, it instead falls prone if it is airborne.
Bound by Margins
Prerequisite: The Whispering Abyss patron, 9th level
As an action, choose a 20‑foot square you can see within 60 feet. Until the start of your next turn, the area becomes razor ink: difficult terrain, and any creature that moves through it takes 10 slashing damage per 5 feet moved. You can use this feature PB times per long rest.
Secret Scribe
Prerequisite: The Whispering Abyss patron, Pact of the Tome
Your Book of Shadows can ritually cast the following spells without material components: identify, comprehend languages, augury, divination. You add them to the rituals you know for Book of Ancient Secrets if you have that invocation.
Ledger of Names
Prerequisite: The Whispering Abyss patron, 7th level
As a bonus action, mark a creature you can see within 60 feet for 1 minute. Against the marked creature, your spells ignore half cover and three‑quarters cover, and the first time each round you deal damage to it, you add 1d6 psychic damage. You can use this feature PB times per long rest.
Roleplay & Balance Notes
Loop: Use eldritch blast plus Tether of Secrets to destabilize foes, Rewrite the Margin to correct crucial rolls, and Consign to the Archive to remove priority targets.
Counters: Your subclass pressures casters, but avoids hard counterspell; fate‑control uses limited reactions to prevent abuse.
Synergies:
Agonizing Blast boosts core damage while your tether adds control.
Book of Ancient Secrets + Secret Scribe = knowledge-power play style.
Misty Visions pairs well with illusions from the expanded list.
