Summary
I have an upcoming project that I needed a ground plane on my GPS antennas. I also wanted the GPS antenna securely but “lightly” attached so any impact on the antenna would release it and prevent serious damage. This uses 3 magnets (9mm dia.) on the frame to secure the ground plane and attached GPS antenna. If the antenna ever gets hit by accident, the ground plane should release from the magnets and can just be replaced, hopefully, without any damage. This uses a ¾ inch hole in the sheet metal ground plane that gets “sandwiched” between the base of the antenna and the 3D printed "gpsplug". This was designed to fit onto a 1.5” wide bar. You will need a precision 3/4 in dia. hole in the the metal as the 3D printed "gpsplug" needs close tolerance. I used a Greelee radio chassis punch to make a clean hole. The metal used was just a scrap of sheet metal I cut with snips first then used the pilot hole for the chassis punch for a bolt and used a drill to grind the edges smooth against a grinding wheel.
