This part has two functions. It covers the opening in the lid for better protection against debris and it latches the lid in place more securely.

Lid can be pulled off from handle of the part and with latching, the lid wont get off unintentionally so easily. Mechanism may seem counterintuitive, but it works quite well with this imperfect low-pressure mobile cleaner.
