I've tried a few iterations of filament guides and got tired of anything with rollers, as they invariably ended up squeaking (especially on retraction).

This approach has no moving parts: it uses a short length of PTFE Bowden tubing to guide filament into the extruder without binding or grinding. The flexible tubing works equally well with top- or side-mounted spools.
