Summary
This is an OpenSCAD design for a base for a 5th generation NUC.
I'm currently awaiting its manufacture with Shapeways. It may need updating before it's perfected.
The depth of the sidewalls can be altered and there are features that can be enabled or disabled, such as vesa holes, a logo, ethernet port etc. Parameters exist for the size of most things, so you can adapt the size and shape of things to your needs.
There have been three updates to the code. The current one is version 4, which is now with Shapeways.
Instructions
Version 1 imported a dxf for the logo and had straight through holes for the mounting screw, which you would need to provide.
In version 2, I changed the screw channels to accept the screws that come with the nuc. They sit in hole with the screw head at the same level as with the provided base.
The logo was changed to use a polyline logo generated from inkscape. So no file importing. Remove or insert the logo of your choice.
Update: It came back from Shapeways. The screw channels line up perfectly with the board mount points, which is nice because I had to measure it. Intel don't provide mechanical information on the position of the nuc board relative to the nuc case.
There were two issues:
(1) The sides lines up nicely, but the corners weren't a good fit because the corner radius on the thing was smaller than the corner radius on the nuc. I've increased it to 8 mm from 6 mm.
(2) The hole in the vesa mounting points was small enough (r=0.9mm) that it closed up when printed. Also it's a little too small to thread in the vesa mounting screw provided with the nuc. I've increased it to r=1.2mm.
These changes are in the third version of the file.
Another Update:
After hacking at the lip corners in the model with a knife to test out the changes, if found it still wasn't a perfect fit because there are two dimples on the inside of the front face of the case that I hadn't found before. Curse you Intel for not publishing complete diagrams. Putting two cutouts on the front lip for these dimples makes it fit perfectly. Version 4 adds the necessary cutouts. Also, after spending a little time with the calipers, I've change the vesa mounting hole internal radius to 1.1mm. A little too small is better than a little too large.
Version 4 is going to Shapeways (bye bye $50) . Hopefully it will turn out fine and will be the final version.
