PURPOSE
I have sockets, and socket sets. The handles connect to the adapters, connect to the individual sockets, drive the bolts, with power tools. Still, I often prefer an individual nut driver. It's simpler, color coded, just what I want. I have a set, actually two, one SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), and one metric, covering most of what I ever need. I got mine at H.F., but I imagine most sets would be very similar in their measurements. These tool holders serve my needs very well.
OVERVIEW
I have a Prusa Mini Plus, so I printed my tool holders in a 4+3 configuration. That is, I might have squeezed all 7 drivers into my 180mm limit, but the spacing would not be comfortable. So I split them; see photos.
INTENDED USE
These tool holders are meant to be attached, with #6 or similar screws, to a vertical surface on a workbench, workboard or similar surface (see photos). They do not have pegs for pegboard, skadis, etc. There is no Gridfinity module; given the weight of the individual drivers, I'm not sure the grid would be a good fit. I could be wrong, and thousands of people might say I told you so. :)
PRINT FILES
There are two sets, metric and SAE. In each set, there is a holder for a group of 4 drivers, called “A”, and a second group of 3 drivers, called “B”. Each holder is two parts, the tool holder itself, plus a small part called the nameplate, which has the labels, nicely visible if you put in a color change with your slicer software. It sounds more complicated than it really is.
PRINTING
I used VoxelPLA at 15% infill, but with 4 perimeters. A layer height of 0.2mm should be fine, or you could try 0.15 for more detail in the lettering, the labels, only on the nameplates.
For an example, let's say you want the A+B set of holders for metric drivers, with labels for the sizes. Then you need 4 files, all containing “metric”. You can print the two “nameplate” files, for labels, at the same time. The color change occurs at the same height.
ASSEMBLY
With my printer, the main tool holder needed a little bit of minor cleanup. For the nameplates, the visual appearance is important, so clean up strings as needed, but take care not to damage the actual lettering.
After deciding where to mount them, attach the tool holders with small wood screws. Do this before inserting the nameplates. (Otherwise it is difficult to get a good angle to use a screwdriver). Then put in the nameplates. They should stay in place; however, if you're concerned in case they are bumped, I would recommend a small drop of hot glue, in the center, to attach them. It should not require more than this, and would be easy to remove if you ever decided to relocate the tool holders.
