Summary
This was a 7th grade project in a computers / writing class.
Our school is on a barrier island that often has flooding problems, particularly during storms like Hurricane Sandy.
The students researched ways that homeowners and communities can protect themselves from flooding. The students then used Tinkercad to design and print a structure that would be helpful in a flood situation.
One student example is shown.
Project: Coastal Flooding Design
Objective
Imagine your community has been devastated by a flood that resulted from a storm larger than Hurricane Sandy. Design a system (including public works projects, such as bulkheads, seawalls, dune modifications or street/sewer improvements) or building that will restore the community and protect the individuals or community from future flood-causing storms.
Audience
This was a 7th grade project, but could work for grades 5 - 9
Preparation
The students had done research on the ways communities have dealt with the threat of flooding. Students had limited experience with Tinkercad.com
Steps
- Use the Internet to research ways people deal with the threat of coastal flooding
- Use Tinkercad to design a structure
- Print structures
- Write a description of the structure you designed, and an explanation of how it will work to protect the community from flooding.
Results
The students successfully designed structures including dams, drains, sea walls, and raised buildings.
