While there's no shortage of bed level sensor mount designs floating around, there is, IMO, a shortage of good bed level sensor mount designs for the Anet A8.
Most designs for mounting BLTouch type sensors to the Anet A8 stock carriage either locate the sensor a great distance from the nozzle, don't attach securely enough to handle long term abuse, or require design changes to fan mounts that tend to diminish print quality.
Woody_ published “BLTouch ANET A8 Belt Mount” on Thingiverse that is based on kennethjiang's “Anet A8 x axis belt holder”, which I've already been using for years on both my Anet A8 and Anet A8 Plus with fantastic results. I liked the look and apparent strength of this design, and I especially like the proximity it places the sensor to the nozzle, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I Left most of Woody_'s fantastic design as is, but did add the same 5mm hole as “arnoboy1998” of Thingiverse for replacing the sensor tip without removing the sensor if need be, and to ease installation, I added keeper cuts for M3 nuts to the tops of the mounting ears.
It's my intent to use this model on both my Anet A8 and Anet A8 Plus printers. Thus far, I've only installed and tested it on my Anet A8 Plus since I have yet to relocate my A8's components to an all steel frame. That said, my Anet A8 Plus extruder configuration is NOT the default A8 Plus setup, but has been modified to be identical to that of the A8. Of the two machines, I simply prefer the older design as it's easier for me to do filament swaps manually with that setup and since I like to make whatever changes I make to one of my Anets to both.
I'm not sure how my hotend carriage setups differ from the original author of this design, however, I found that upon installation, my 3DTouch sensor tip does not drop below the tip of the nozzle. Rather than adding material to the original design to extend the reach of the sensor tip, I opted to add an assortment of shims that can be fitted between the sensor and this design. My installation on my hybrid A8 Plus put the extended sensor tip 2.2mm above the position of the nozzle tip. Of the six shims included with this remix, from .5mm to 3mm in .5mm increments, I'm using the 3mm shim on my A8 Plus. The beauty of using ABL is that I can swap build surfaces with the greatest of ease. The 3mm shim places my offset to .8mm.
Things you MUST be aware of before installing this model and potentially damaging your printer.
- This issue may have something to do with my custom Z axis bearing carriers, but this model would hit the left side carrier with the X axis endstop in it's stock location. You will have to somehow adjust the switch, the switch position, or add some type of extension to act as a slightly elongated trigger to the extruder carriage. I chose to slightly tweak the lever on the switch by just a hair so that the switch would engage before this model slams into that carrier. After installing this, do NOT simply autohome. Move the extruder carriage all the way left by hand and see what must be done, if anything so that the endstop will trigger.
- Having tweaked the X endstop, my carriage would hit my custom belt tensioner on the right side. Since the X axis belt was in dire need of replacement anyways, I replaced the belt with an ever so slightly longer belt that allowed me to retract my tensioner far enough into the right side carrier to remove that interference.
Those were the only issues I encountered using this design. They were easily resolved, however, if you're not mindful of such things, you could cause harm to your machine.
Bed leveling sensors were not on anybodies mind when the Anet A8's extruder carriage was designed. After playing with several designs, it's my opinion that Woody_'s design locates the BLTouch as near to the nozzle tips location as it could be without making major alterations to the carriage or heatbrake cooling system.
One more caveat I wanted to mention: I installed “kennethjiang's Anet A8 x axis belt holder" as I was initially assembling my Anet A8 Plus. By design, the A8 Plus has the loose ends of the X-Axis belt on top, whereas the classic A8 has the loose ends on bottom. Kennethjiang's design, like this model, has the loose ends on the bottom. To use Kennethjang's design, or this design on the A8 Plus, the X-Axis belt direction must be reversed. At the time, I was in a hurry to get the machine up and running so I simply reversed a pair of wires in the JST connector at the X-Axis motor. To use this Anet A8 model on the A8 Plus, you'll want to either do as I did initially, or easier yet, since you'll have to rebuild Marlin to add BLTouch capabilities anyways, reverse the X-Axis direction in the Marlin “Configuration.h” file as such: Find the “//Invert the stepper direction” section of the file and change the X axis line to read: #define INVERT_X_DIR true
UPDATE 10092023: I added a version 2 of the Belt connector / Sensor mount. The version 2 design differs in the way the touch sensor mounts. I've been using a cover/protector by “Pheelix14” on the 3DTouch sensors installed on my Ender 3 Pro and CTC A10s. After experiencing a recent collision with the touch sensor and a bed clip on my Ender 3 Pro and noting that the cover/protector saved the nylon tip of the touch sensor, I decided I'd like to use Pheelix14's cover on my Anet machines as well. I removed the captive nut cut-outs, opened the screw hole on the obstructed side, and extended that opening through the elbow portion of the mount so that the screws can now enter from the top, threading into the cover to hold the sensor in place. Note that this setup only works on my A8 Plus machine because I'm using the 3mm shim. Without the shim, the cover would interfere with the bottom X axis guide rod. Version 1 of this model should work with all BLTouch and 3DTouch setups on the A8 platform, but doesn't allow for the cover to be used. Version 2 allows for the cover to be used, but is far less likely to work with all setups.
UPDATE 042222024: I added a file: A8_Plus_Xstop_Trigger.stl This part is a 3mm bumper for triggering the X axis endstop switch. When I first installed this mod, I physically bent the arm on the microswitch so it would trigger before the BLTouch mount would slam into the Z axis bearing carrier on the left. I just got sick of looking at the bent switch, so I straightened the arm and made this part instead. Be advised, this bumper will not work with the injection molded bearing carriers in the X-Axis. The part is designed to slip in between the upper left bearing carrier. I'm using printed carriers that are dimension-ally the same as the aluminum carriers that shipped with the original Anet A8's and others. If you're using model on a newer A8 or A8 Plus, which have the injection molded carriers, you'll likely have to come up with an alternative method for triggering the endstop before the touch mount slams into the left side carrier.
