This is my personal template for making Gridfinity bins in Fusion 360.
No addons or scripts are required. The entire generation is done with the built-in parametric timeline.
It uses no-glue push-fit magnets for the base. See https://www.printables.com/model/759434-gridfinity-removable-push-fit-magnets-base for more details on that.
Usage tips:
- Import the .f3d file into Fusion.
- Edit parameters to set the size you want for the bin: number of units wide, number of units deep and height.
The height can be set in Gridfinity height units, but you can also disregard them and override gridfinityContentsHeight directly. - Edit parameters for your specific magnets (if any).
Most of my nominally “6x2mm magnets” are actually 1.6mm, and I have gridfinityMagnetHoleDepth set to 2mm. You want the hole to be slightly deeper than the height of the magnets to acount for the drooping of the bridges during printing. - Edit the “Contents top” sketch to add holes for whatever you want to put in your bin, then use the extrude down. Add some fillets or chamfers for easier insertion.
If you do not want a nesting lip, you can disable it: In the timeline, search for the sweep feature named “Gridfinity nesting lip”, right click, and select “Supress Features”.
Errata: Aug 25 2025 fixes
The first released version of this template has been found to contain one major defect and some minor defects. All these problems have been fixed in the v1.1 release. For transparency, and to help fix the defects in any existing designs that used the older template, detailed descriptions and fixes follow.
Major impact: Missing clearance in lip
The lip lacked clearance, preventing the bins from being able to stack on each other.
Fix for existing designs
Edit the sketch “Gridfinity base profile” and modify these two dimensions of the lip: 0.8mm→0.7mm and 2.4mm→1.9mm.
Minor impact: magnet hole position
The distance between the magnet hole centers and the edge of the bin was 0.25mm too long.
For a reference 6mm magnet in the bin against a 6mm magnet in a baseplate, this would cause a 7.5% decrease in contact area and, by extension, slightly reduced magnetic pull. If the magnetic surface in the baseplate is bigger or smaller, the performance decrease becomes progressively smaller, reaching 0% (i.e. no loss in performance) with baseplate magnet diameter ≥6.7mm or ≤5.3mm.
Fix for existing designs
Edit the sketch “Gridfinity base outline” and change the two driving dimensions that give the hole its position: 8mm→7.75mm.
Cosmetic: Missing lip fillet
The lip in the original design lacked a fillet. This fillet is not present in the Gridfinity Design Reference, but is present in the original Zack's gridfinity models.
Adding this fillet prevents filament from potentially slightly drooping out of the edges of the bin. The impact is largely cosmetic however, as Gridfinity provides more than enough inter-bin clearance for this to cause bins to touch.
Fix for existing designs
Rewind the timeline to immediately after the Sweep feature named “Gridfinity nesting lip”. Click on the edge of the lip at the top of the model and add a 0.5mm fillet feature.
Minor changes not impacting existing designs
Redefinition of height units
An increase of 1u (Gridfinity unit of height) corresponds to an increase of 7mm.
The previous version used the definition of height units used by the Gridfinity Design Reference v3 (2022), where a 0u bin is 14mm tall (lip not included), 1u is 21mm, 2u is 28mm and so on.
The current versions of the Gridfinity Design Reference (v5), other generators like gridfinity-rebuilt-openscad use a more intuitive convention, where a 1u bin is 7mm tall (lip not included), a 2u bin is 14mm tall, and so on. A 0u bin is invalid in this convention. The updated template now also follows this convention.
Unused parameters
There were two unused parameters in the previous version of this template:
- gridfinityNestingClearance: it was meant to be used to offset the lip, but I forgot to do that, leading to the broken nesting in the older template.
Gridfinity Design Reference v5 specifies all the dimensions for the lip, so I have removed the parameter and used those instead. - gridfinityMagnetHoleBridgeHeight: this is a vestige from a previous (unreleased) version of the template that used combination screw-or-magnet holes (like in the original Zack's models) but with auxiliary bridge layers to enable them to print correctly without supports.
The current version uses pressure fit magnets instead and requires no auxiliary bridging layers.
