Unless you have existing drawers you want to convert into Gridfinity, I found it to be cheaper to purchase Systainer® storage boxes rather than having to build from scratch (at least where I live currently with cost of materials); plus you get the added benefits of better portability and durability. Every box is stackable to each other, however the “squat” models are intended to stack 2ea high inside a drawer box; great for small quantities of nuts+washers. The rim of each box also accepts standard 12mm label tape for individual identification.
Printing from PLA I found 1.5mm shell thickness is plenty strong enough. My slice settings:
- Perimeters: 3
- Top/bottom thickness: 3
- Layer height: 0.35mm
- Nozzle size: 0.5mm
I made these with breakaway supports in the model because I'm not a big fan of the native support designs in Prusa/Super Slicers. In my mind the small amount of waste material is worth it because it only takes 5 seconds to remove entirely with little to zero cleanup. Use something like a rigid putty knife to hold the support material down to a table, then simply twist/roll the box to remove (I do this on all 4 sides). I had the best results by maxing out the bridge flow % in print settings, but do optimize for your own machine.
These boxes are all parametrically designed and can be made to fit any size desired. Simply open the .f3d file and change the user parameters for “Gx” or “Gy”, then change the final rectangular array to match the grid.
