i suggest use a primer to seal the plastic mesh and some kind of seal.
Im using a acrilic transparent paint in spray (uses a benzene thiner so make a beter PLA blending). In ABS you could user a "ABS juice" to make the junctions more even, and some primer to make them more durable.
Of course dont use paint who uses a thinner that melt your plastic (acetone in ABS and benze in PLA) .
