Boaty McBoatface is a famous British autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operated by the National Oceanography Centre in the UK. It gained internet fame in 2016 when it won a public poll to name a new £200M polar research vessel, which officials ultimately named the RRS Sir David Attenborough.The yellow submarine is a 700-kilogram, 3.6-meter-long deep-sea robot capable of diving 6,000 meters and traveling up to 2,500 kilometers under polar ice. Deployed from the RRS Sir David Attenborough, Boaty is routinely used on deep-sea missions to collect critical data on warming oceans and climate change.
