Gunslinger Stitch Layout Template
Description
This template is designed to help leatherworkers quickly and consistently lay out a Gunslinger-style decorative stitch pattern on belts.
The template is placed over the belt and used to trace the oval curve.
By repeating the process and aligning the template with the previous stitch intersection, a continuous Gunslinger stitch pattern can be marked along the full length of the belt.
The OpenSCAD source is included so the template can be customised for different belt widths and pattern sizes.
Printing
Recommended print settings:
- Layer Height: 0.20 mm
- Perimeters: 3
- Infill: 15–20%
- Supports: Not required
- Material: PLA, PETG or ABS
- Print Orientation: Flat on the build plate
For maximum durability PETG is recommended, although PLA works perfectly well for normal workshop use.
Using the Template
Step 1 – Mark Border Stitch Lines
Before laying out the Gunslinger pattern, mark your upper and lower border stitch lines using your preferred stitching groover, wing divider or marking tool.
Step 2 – Position the Template
Place the template between the border stitch lines.
Align the centreline of the template with the centre of the belt section where the pattern will begin.
Step 3 – Trace the Curve
Using a scratch awl, stylus or fine marker, trace the oval cut-out onto the leather.
The cut-out edge forms one half of the Gunslinger pattern.
Step 4 – Repeat the Pattern
Move the template along the belt and align it with the previous intersection point of the traced pattern.
Trace the next section.
Continue this process until the desired length of belt has been marked.
Step 5 – Stitch
Punch or mark stitching holes along the traced layout lines and stitch using your preferred saddle stitch or machine stitching method.
Customisation
The OpenSCAD source allows adjustment of:
- Belt Width
- Template Length
- Arc Span
- Arc Depth
- Template Thickness
- Text Labels
- Centre Reference Line
Changing the arc span and arc depth allows different Gunslinger stitch styles to be created, ranging from long, narrow diamonds to shorter, wider patterns.
Notes
This template was developed as a fully parametric OpenSCAD project and can be adapted to suit virtually any belt width.
If you create improvements or alternative stitch patterns, feel free to share them with the community.
