This model was born out of the desire to build a high airflow, easy to use, and durable desiccant holder.
I was not satisfied with the selection of desiccant holders designed to be used inside of 1kg spools.
Most were not high flow enough, the ones which were, I found to be too flimsy and would break easily if dropped while changing spools. I needed to make a design that would be high air flow, be rugged enough to survive small drops, and also be captured within the spool so it doesn't easily fall out. My use case for these desiccant holders is to remain in my 1kg spools as they're transferred to/from my filament dryers/storage. They needed to be easy to transfer to new spools, but also not fall out of my in-use spools and durable enough to not explode for the occasions where I accidentally drop them.
Notes from the creator
I am quite fond of using toroids as a design motif for multiple reasons. They're very stable and strong and provide a larger surface area than cylinders. This model features a toroidal tunnel, which further enhances the surface area for more air flow. Hexagonal tiling was chosen for both aesthetics and for the efficiency of mapping them onto the curved surfaces. They're also the bestagons!
